My Coca Leaf Reading – Tarapoto, Peru

Coca Leaves

When I was at the ayahuasca retreat, our shaman teacher gave us the option to see Donna (not her real name), who offered coca leaf readings for $100.00. The coca leaf comes from the cocaine plant, and many Peruvians chew the leaves. I was curious about Donna after one of the retreat attendees said it was worth having the reading done. She also said Donna was very open – she told the retreat attendee that she’s often too tired to have sex – her boyfriend is 20 years younger than her.

On my way to see Donna, a Peruvian woman who spoke perfect English, I walked with a retreat assistant for 10 minutes through the lush jungle, the sun shining through the branches, and heat mixing with the smell of moss. Upon arrival at her home, a large Brazilian Mastiff greeted us. I was a little frightened because I didn’t know if the dog was friendly or not.

Donna’s boyfriend, a tall man with a long black ponytail, took me into their cozy house to wait for Donna. I noticed a small kitchen with a yellow teapot, a fur rug on the floor outlining a small coffee table, and wooden stairs made with deer antlers leading up to the second floor.

When Donna was ready for me, her boyfriend came to pick me up. I followed him outside to meet Donna. Donna was a petite woman with gray hair pulled into a messy ponytail. She had a sleeveless purple shirt, capris, and no shoes. I followed her to a small maloca (a circular building with wooden supports in the shape of a hexagon). She said I could take off my shoes, which I did.

As I entered the maloca, I noticed white sand beneath my feet. In the center of the maloca, a small table and two cushions were placed. Donna invited me to sit. I sat across from her as my feet sank into the sand. Donna said she wanted sand in her maloca because it helps to ground the people who visit her. She continued to say that many times we want to see the ocean, but it’s the sand that makes us feel good. So, she had a vision to put sand in her “office.”

I brought three small bundles of white sage to give to Donna as a gift. She was happy to receive them. My shaman teacher said they don’t have sage in Peru.

Donna asked me to grab a bunch of dried coca leaves from her zippered pouch. Then she instructed me to hold the leaves between my palms and blow on them three times. After I blew on them with my warm air, I opened my palms to let the leaves fall onto the table.

I looked at Donna as she stared at the leaves. She asked me, “Are you a healer?” I said, “Yes, in a Western sense of the word. I work for a hospital helping people who are dying.” Donna shook her head as she understood.

Donna said, “The leaves tell me you take on too much sadness from your patients and their families. But I also see you were born a healer.” I wasn’t expecting her to say I was a healer. But I was pleasantly surprised that she was intuitive. At that moment, I felt a deep connection to Donna. She also told me to look up paintings by Alex Grey. She said he captures the human spirit in his paintings.

I had prepared four questions in my small dollar store notebook. The first one was, “Is there anything I need to work on for my spiritual development?”

Donna said I need to breathe. She said, “Breath is spirit, and you need to connect with your spirit without any concepts.” She continued to say that meditation will help me. In my head, I agreed with her.

Then she looked at me with concern. She asked me, “Why do you doubt yourself so much? You need to stop that!” I agreed with her – I do doubt myself sometimes. I also get into my head way too much. I need to let go more.

My second question was, “Do you have any insights on my marriage?” Donna smiled a little. She said my husband, Jeff, is a good man, and he loves me very much. She also said I should stay married to him, and we were married in a previous past life.

Donna encouraged me to have more fun with my husband and to breathe together. My thoughts went back to when we were dating. I remember Jeff and me lying together in bed, in my newly rented townhouse, with the soft light of the sunset. I felt warm as we held each other and practiced tantric breathing. We would breathe together on the inhale and the exhale, creating a natural rhythm.

The third question was about my job: “Any messages about my job?” Donna encouraged me to think about starting my own business (like a death doula). She also said I have too much education. I need to focus on spirit and not on more education. I have everything I need to work with people who are dying. Instead of seeking more education, I need to work with my intuition, open my heart, and mind. I need to work on staying in the present moment.

My final question was, “How can I become enlightened in this lifetime?” Donna said I must let go and return to spirit. She said we have things backward. We should cry when a baby is born because of the challenging life that awaits, and be happy for people who die because they are done with their journey on earth.

She didn’t answer my question directly – whether I will become enlightened in this lifetime. Instead, she said that this is her last life on earth – she will not be returning. Maybe she has reached enlightenment.

Donna answered all my questions. I gave her $100 in US cash (which I thought was a lot of money for a thirty-minute reading). She placed the cash under her tablecloth. We both stood up, and Donna led me out of the maloca.

I found the coca reading intriguing, and I’m glad I decided to do it. There are some things to consider, especially her comments about my marriage and returning to Spirit. I am working on positive thoughts and letting go of things in the past.

Namaste.

Tango with Technology
You offered your hand with a gentleman’s grin.
Without hesitation, I put my hand into yours.

The smell of sandalwood enveloped me.

You said, “Let’s dance.”
I stepped into the unknown to the known.
Temptation was at every turn.

As I twirled, the lights flashed into my eyes.
I was memorized.
I’m addicted to the rhythm of the music.
My brain is full of you.

You whispered, “Follow me.”
I danced until my head spun.
Until it was no longer fun.

Finding my balance – I let go.
The delusions disappeared.
I no longer danced on glass.
I walked away - seeking a new a paradise.

Swimming to God
I am swimming to God. I see the bright sun in front of me. The rays make their way to my heart. I am swimming to God. My love for God is in my veins, the pathways out from my center. I am swimming to God. I feel light and cool, my body forming with the waves. “I am here, God,” I say in a whisper. "I make my way to you."

Behind the Shaman’s Curtain

Close your magical eyes.
Connect with dreamtime ties.
Use your vast imagination.
Stop life’s stagnation.

Go behind the Shaman’s curtain.
Seeing the truth is certain.
A new reality awaits.
Do you have what it takes?

Be strong and brave.
Meet your guide in a cave.
See the vision.
Make it a mission.

Go behind the Shaman’s curtain.
Your life is not certain.
Open your “I.”
Because soon you’ll see why.

Mind Control Discussion Panel

I just got back from attending the Traveling Shamans Camp in Colorado. Traveling Shamans Camp is an annual festival for traveling shamans, visionary artists, healers, and wisdom teachers. I want to share the collective thoughts on mind control and how we can free our minds.

Mind control starts in childhood. Our parents, family members, teachers, and society tell us what to think, feel, say, and do. It’s a lot like training animals with rewards and punishments. Early traumas or wounds keep us locked in fear. The more traumas that we have, the more we are prone to mind control. We can heal our traumas by reliving the trauma (in a safe way). We have to face things to initiate transformation.

Mind control is part of the colonized mind. Colonialism is a practice of domination or governing influence of a nation over a dependent country, territory, or people. We can see this practice of domination repeat through the centuries – showing the immaturity of the human race.

Right now, the world is using colonialism with lockdowns and mandates. In this century, the elites will enjoy even more control with technology as their ploy. It seems like a scary time – but remember to let love guide you.

We need to unplug from the television (tell-a-vision). Television is a “program.” Examine your own beliefs vs. society’s beliefs. Find acceptance among diversity and see the strength of common strands in the community.

How can we free our minds? We need to focus on the soul level, the roots. When we examine the unconscious and subconscious mind, we understand the shamanic way. We are divine, and we can make loving choices. Conscience = Common-Sense Knowledge

If you know yourself, then you are not blind to ignorance. You can see clearly. Right now, everyone must open their eyes. It is not a time to sleepwalk.

If we can’t think for ourselves, if we’re unwilling to question authority, then we’re just putty in the hands of those in power. But if the citizens are educated and form their own opinions, then those in power work for us. In every country, we should be teaching our children the scientific method and the reasons for a Bill of Rights. With it comes a certain decency, humility and community spirit. In the demon-haunted world that we inhabit by virtue of being human, this may be all that stands between us and the enveloping darkness. – Carl Sagon

We can think for ourselves and free our minds through meditation. The breath is our #1 medicine. When we have too many thoughts, we can focus on our breath to bring us back to the present moment. Singing and praying can also stop negative thoughts and mind control.

It’s important to be your raw, authentic self. We are in a unique time where the world is cracking open like an earthquake. The illusion is dissolving. Soon we will see our divine blueprint.

Your thoughts are powerful. Be aware of your inner thoughts. Ask yourself, “Are these limited thoughts or growth thoughts?” Think expansive thoughts that include a vision for yourself, your family, and the world.

Namaste, world.

The Call to Shamanism

Right now, we are called to go beyond appearances and go deeper. One way we can go deeper is to explore Shamanism. There’s a lot to learn about Shamanism, and it can take years to develop the skills of a Shaman. However, we need to start somewhere, and the tools we’ve learned in life can help us too. Here are some key things to think about if you’d like to explore Shamanism (taken from the journal notes of Joe R. Lineweaver – who learned Shamanism in Peru):

  • In spiritual practice, we ask for divine intervention for what we can’t do for ourselves.
  • Destiny has no idea of linear time.
  • The purpose of ritual (from the word “spiritual”) is to suspend space and time.
  • Shamans journey to capture energy from a specific place.
  • Archetypes: warrior, teacher, seer, healer.
  • Heal by looking and shine your light in the darkness.
  • Evil spirits abhor (detest) faith, feed on fear.
  • Metaphor becomes Reality.
  • Shamans work with extensive systems of divination (clairvoyance or divination/conversation with spirits).
  • Power animals teach Shamans to move past what blocks them. Let the power animal dance you.
  • Ancestral energies can be helping spirits.
  • The left side is feminine (yin) and the right side is masculine (yang).
  • Ritual creates change.
  • Gifts come from struggle.
  • Give tobacco offering to spirits. Helping spirits need to be fed (offerings).
  • An altar is a physical place for the spirits to come.
  • Have a travel altar. All objects on the altar have a purpose.
  • Smudging cleanses the aura.
  • Merge with the helping spirits and look out through the spirit’s eyes. Ask to be shown the soul’s purpose and energy.
  • Ask: What needs to die to move on? Live with death as an ally. Destroy your fear of letting go of this ordinary reality.
  • Spirits can open the door for you, but you have to go through it.
  • Even your wildest dreams are doable. Notice the doors and step through.
  • Each person has a unique relationship with the Universe.
  • The Shaman’s job is to cultivate a relationship with the unknown.
  • Learn about the four directions (North, South, West, East).
  • Shamanism is like installing a new operating system. May need to remove the old operating system.
  • Learn about plants for healing. Shaman’s plant has powerful doctors in it.
  • Taking a journey is different than meditation. You need a vehicle (kicks the brain into an altered state – like drumming, bells, chanting, or fasting).
  • You need a journeying trance state and embodiment trance.
  • You can’t use power until you’ve cultivated it!
  • We can do this work with intent once we learn the keys to open the door.
